Microphor was named by Macquart (1827). It is extant. It is the type genus of Microphorinae.

It was assigned to Empididae by Aldrich (1905), Carpenter (1992) and Evenhuis (1994); and to Microphorinae by Hennig (1971), Sinclair and Cumming (2006) and Shamshev and Perkovsky (2022).
