Taxonomy
Murex trapezium was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Pleuroploca.

It was recombined as Pleuroploca trapezia by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010); it was recombined as Pleuroploca trapezium by Snyder et al. (2012).
