Entoprocta was named by Nitsche (1869). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Fuchs et al. (2010).

It was reranked as the subphylum Entoprocta by Bassler (1953); it was reranked as the unranked clade Entoprocta by Edgecombe et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Bryozoa by Bassler (1953); to Trochozoa by Zrzavy et al. (1998); to Metazoa by Sepkoski (2002); to Lophotrochozoa by Fuchs et al. (2010); and to Polyzoa by Edgecombe et al. (2011) and Nielsen (2012).
