Elkania was named by Ford (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm(Fran) O (l) Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Obolella desiderata.

It was assigned to Elkaniidae by Holmer (1993) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Lingulida by Sepkoski (2002).
