Glyptoglossella was named by Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 397 Replacement for Glyptoglossa.]. Its type is Glyptoglossa cavellosa.

It was assigned to Glossellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Lingulida by Sepkoski (2002).
