Taxonomy
Kunpania was named by Sun (1978). Its type is Kunpania scopulusa. It is the type genus of Dicynodontoidea. It was considered monophyletic by Angielcyzk et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Dicynodontidae by Li and Sun (2008); and to Dicynodontoidea by Angielcyzk et al. (2021).
