Curticia was named by Walcott (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto Cm Fran Sepkoski's reference number: 2,17]. Its type is Curticia elegantula. It is the type genus of Curticiidae.

It was assigned to Brachiopoda by Bengtson (1992); to Curticiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
