Taxonomy
Patagosmilus was named by Forasiepi and Carlini (2010). Its type is Patagosmilus goini. It was considered monophyletic by Suarez et al. (2023).
It was assigned to Thylacosmilinae by Engelman et al. (2020); and to Thylacosmilidae by Forasiepi and Carlini (2010) and Suarez et al. (2023).
