Dysoristus was named by Bell in Lochman and Duncan (1941) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo Cm Dres-u Sepkoski's reference number: 17,580]. It is the type genus of Dysoristidae.

It was assigned to Dysoristidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
