Taxonomy
Ephippelasma was named by Cooper (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1,398,910]. Its type is Ephippelasma minutum.

It was assigned to Acrotretinae by Wright (1963); to Ephippelasmatinae by Holmer (1986) and Holmer (1989); to Ephippelasmatidae by Williams et al. (2000) and Popov (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
