Lepidocrania was named by Cooper and Grant (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Lepidocrania tardispinosa.

It was assigned to Craniidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
