Linnarssonia was named by Walcott (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Cm uMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,522,885]. Its type is Obolella transversa.

It was assigned to Acrotretidae by Williams et al. (2000); to Linnarssoniinae by Landing et al. (2002); and to Acrotretida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
