Neocrania was named by Lee and Brunton (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: T R Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. It is extant. Its type is Patella anomala.

It was synonymized subjectively with Novocrania by Lee and Brunton (2001).

It was assigned to Craniidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
