Spondylotreta was named by Cooper (1956). Its type is Spondylotreta concentrica.

It was assigned to Acrotretinae by Wright (1963) and Holmer (1989); to Acrotretidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
