Veliseptum was named by Popov (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u O Ashg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Veliseptum fragile.

It was assigned to Ephippelasmatinae by Holmer (1986); to Ephippelasmatidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
