Cryptotreta was named by Pel'man (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Cm Atda-u Sepkoski's reference number: 522,885]. It is the type genus of Cryptotretidae.
It was assigned to Articulata by Bengtson (1992); to Cryptotretidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Paterinida by Sepkoski (2002).
