Taxonomy
Craniops was named by Hall (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 4,397]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Craniopsidae.

It was assigned to Craniopsidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Craniopsida by Sepkoski (2002).
