Tetrataxis was named by Ehrenberg (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Mosc]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Tetrataxidae.

It was assigned to Tetrataxidae by Loeblich and Tappan (1984); and to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002).
