Trematosia was named by Cooper (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Cm Tojo Sepkoski's reference number: 23,932]. Its type is Obolus radifer.

It was assigned to Yorkiidae by Cooper (1976); to Nisusiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Kutorginida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
