Goniatites gangeticus was named by de Koninck (1863).

It was recombined as Xenodiscus gangeticus by Griesbach (1880); it was recombined as Lecanites gangeticus by Waagen (1895); it was recombined as Gyrophiceras gangeticum by Spath (1934).
