Lydekkerina huxleyi

Taxonomy
Bothriceps huxleyi was named by Lydekker (1889). Its type specimen is BMNH R.507, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Edenburg, which is in an Induan terrestrial horizon in the Katberg Formation of South Africa. It is the type species of Lydekkerina.

It was recombined as Lydekkerina huxleyi by Broom (1915), Haughton (1925), Parrington (1948), Shishkin et al. (1996), Schoch and Milner (2000), Damiani and Rubidge (2003), Jeannot et al. (2006) and Schoch (2013).

A. M. Jeannot et al. 2006Distinguished from all other lydekkerinids by the following autapomorphies: anterior palatal vacuity with anterodorsal projections; ventral surface of skull roof with series of elongate ridges (condition unknown in other lydekkerinids); vomerine shagreen present (a possible autapomorphic reversal).
