Noctilio lacrimaelunaris was named by Czaplewski (1996). Its type specimen is LACM 135334, a tooth (Left m1), and it is a 3D body fossil.

N. J. Czaplewski 1996 Noctilio of small size; m1 is significantly smaller (Tables 2 and 3; Fig. 4) than in previously known Noctilionidae (N. albiventris and N. leporinus), especially in length and trigonid width.
