Austrohedra was named by Roberts and Jell (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tojo Sepkoski's reference number: 932]. Its type is Austrohedra mimica.

It was assigned to Eoorthidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
