Billingsella was named by Hall and Clarke (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 1,409].

It was assigned to Orthida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Billingsellidae by Williams et al. (2000) and Zhan et al. (2010).
