Cystothalamia ramosa was named by Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (1988) [Holotype incorrectly listed as USNM 427313-327332]. Its type specimen is USNM 427331,427332 and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Imbricatocoelia ramosa by Wu (1991).
