Cortezorthis was named by Johnson and Talent (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Eife-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25,538]. It is the type genus of Cortezorthinae.

It was assigned to Cortezorthinae by Jones (1982) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
