Thompsonella was named by Skinner and Wilde (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-u]. Its type is Thompsonella rugosa.

It was assigned to Fusulinoidea by Skinner and Wilde (1965); and to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002).
