Diplonorthis was named by Mitchell (1972). It is not extant. Its type is Diplonorthis portlocki.

It was assigned to Orthinae by Mitchell (1977); to Nanorthidae by Williams et al. (2000); to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Archaeorthidae by Williams et al. (2007).
