Lagonimico conclucatus

Mammalia - Primates - Cebidae

Taxonomy
Lagonimico conclucatus was named by Kay (1994) [Etymology: conclucatus comes from the Latin verb conclucare, meaning “to crush by treading upon.” Full scientific name means “trampled pancake monkey,” with reference to the state of preservation of the type specimen]. Its type specimen is IGM 184531, a skull ( skull with crowns of left I2, P2-M3, right I1, C-P4), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Lagonimico.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. F. Kay 1994Lagonimico is distinct from Santacrucian and Laventan Miocene platyrrhines
of similar body size, Carlocebus spp., Soriacebus spp., Neosaimiri spp. (includes Lauentiana), Mohanamico hershkouitzi (=Aotus dindensis), in the following combination of characters (upper dental characters unknown for Mohanamico, incomplete in some other taxa, see Table 1): premolar hypocones absent (vs. present); hypocones absent (vs. present); M, much smaller than M, or M, (vs. proportionally larger); lower incisors slightly elongate from cementoename1 junction to occlusal edge (i.e., high crowned) (vs. low-crowned in Neosaimiri and ?Carlocebus, similar to Mohanamico,
very high crowned in Soriacebus); M,, hypoconulids are large (for platyrrhines) (vs. indistinct in all others). Lagonimico is larger than Callimico or any living callitrichine. Other comparisons presented below and listed in Table 1 confirm further the distinctness of Lagonimico from any living small-bodied platyrrhine.
