Glyptoria was named by Cooper (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto Sepkoski's reference number: 23]. Its type is Glyptoria glypta.

It was assigned to Protorthidae by Cooper (1976) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
