Akelina was named by Severgina (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 878]. Its type is Akelina akelina.

It was assigned to Plectambonitinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
