Kampella was named by Baarli (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Kampella guttula.

It was assigned to Heterorthidae by Baarli (1988); to Harknessellidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
