Leioria was named by Cooper (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 23,1050]. Its type is Leioria bentori.

It was assigned to Leioriidae by Cooper (1976) and Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Bengtson (1992) and Sepkoski (2002).
