Lepidorthis was named by Wang (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: O l Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Lepidorthis typicalis.

It was assigned to Glyptorthidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
