Trondorthis was named by Neuman (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 412]. Its type is Orthambonites bifurcatus.

It was assigned to Orthinae by Neuman and Bruton (1974); to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Orthidae by Williams et al. (2000) and Hansen and Holmer (2011).
