Paraonychoplecia was named by Percival (1991) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara S Wenl Sepkoski's reference number: 1137]. Its type is Paraonychoplecia inversa.

It was assigned to Triplesiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
