Taxonomy
Ichthyosaurus extremus was named by Boulenger (1904).

It was synonymized subjectively with Aegirosaurus leptospondylus by Bardet and Fernandez (2000); it was recombined as Brachypterygius extremus by Huene (1922), Delair (1960), Fernandez (1997), McGowan (1997), Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003), Maisch (2010), Fischer et al. (2013), Arkhangelsky and Zverkov (2014) and Ji et al. (2016).
