Plectotreta was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1936). Its type is Plectotreta lindstroemi.

It was assigned to Triplesidae by Bassett and Cocks (1974); to Triplesiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
