Pomatotrema was named by Ulrich and Cooper (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,4].

It was assigned to Polytoechiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Tritoechiinae by Sepkoski (2002).
