It was reranked as the tribe Hydrophinae by Perrier (1928); it was reranked as the subfamily Hydropheinae by Myers et al. (2001); it was misspelled as Hydrophinae by Kuhn (1946) and Kuhn (1966); it was reranked as the subfamily Hydrophiinae by Boulenger (1896), Rasmussen (2001) and Scanlon et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Ophidia by Boié (1827); to Platycerca by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); to Colubridae by Boulenger (1896); to Proteroglypha by Perrier (1928); to Proteroglypha by Kuhn (1946); to Colubroidea by Kuhn (1966); and to Elapidae by Rasmussen (2001), Myers et al.
