Ammonites exaratus was named by Young and Bird (1828).

It was recombined as Harpoceras exaratum by Howarth (1962); it was recombined as Cleviceras exaratum by Howarth (1992); it was recombined as Eleganticeras exaratum by Bécaud (2006) and Benzaggagh et al. (2022).
