Rhactorthis was named by Williams (1963). Its type is Rhactorthis crassa.

It was assigned to Rhactorthinae by Wright (1964) and Owen and Harper (1982); to Rhactorthidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
