Saesorthis was named by Geyer and Mergl (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid]. Its type is Israelaria simplicissima.

It was assigned to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protorthidae by Geyer and Mergl (1997) and Williams et al. (2007).
