Gervillia joannisaustriae was named by Klipstein (1843).

It was recombined as Hoernesia joannisaustriae by Laube (1865), von Wöhrmann (1889) and Bittner (1901); it was recombined as Septihoernesia joannisaustriae by Cox (1964).
