Benthosuchus bystrowi was named by Getmanov (1989). Its type specimen is PIN 3783/1, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Unzha River Basin, which is in an Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Rybinsk Formation of the Russian Federation.
