Stainbrookia was named by Cooper and Dutro (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 538,708]. Its type is Orthis infera.

It was assigned to Onnielidae by Cooper and Dutro (1982); to Rhipidomellinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
