Virgoria was named by Neuman (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 412]. Its type is Virgoria virgensis.

It was assigned to Paurorthidae by Neuman (1976); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
