Wimanella was named by Walcott (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto Cm uMid Sepkoski's reference number: 413]. Its type is Wimanella simplex.

It was assigned to Bohemiellidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
