Acritosia was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse-l P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Acritosia magna.

It was assigned to Teguliferininae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
