Aenigmastrophia was named by Boucot (1971) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. Its type is Aenigmastrophia cooperi. It is the type genus of Aenigmastrophiidae.
It was assigned to Aenigmastrophiidae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Strophomenida by Boucot (1971) and Sepkoski (2002).
